Rev.Com is a company that provides captioning, translation, and transcription services to high-end companies such as Comcast and PBS. They do this by employing freelancers and in-house transcriptionists.

The company was founded in 2010 by Jason Chicola and Josh Breinlinger, going under the name FoxTranscribe and FoxTranslate. They transitioned to more opportunities by expanding the company in 2012 and going under the name Rev.Com.

Rev.Com is not without its accolades. They’ve been the recipient of PC Mag’s Editor’s Choice Award for transcribing video and audio files. They’ve also been featured in sites such as The Wall Street Journal and Tech Crunch.

Needless to say, they’ve made quite a name for themselves and are currently one of the most popular transcription companies in the industry.

There’s no specific requirement or background if you want to apply for Rev.Com.

You need the following if you want to succeed in the company:

• A good pair of headsets and foot pedal for starting and stopping audio files
• Great internet connection (audio files can be in the gigabyte range)
• Great English grammar
• Minimum typing speed of 50 WPM or words-per-minute

How To Get Started at Rev.Com

You’ll have to sign up via their landing page as a freelancer, and not as a client. Clients are the ones who give Rev.Com the audio files that they want transcribed.

The signup is pretty straightforward and will take you about 60 minutes. After filling in your personal information, you’ll be asked to take a test that will determine how great your grammar, capitalization, and punctuation skills are.

After that, you’ll take their typing speed test where they’ll ask you to type as much as possible in 60 seconds.

Then comes the last test, which is a transcription test. You’ll have to download an audio file, determine how many speakers there are in the file and transcribe it.

How To Know If Selected Or Rejected?

Once you’ve done all these, you’ll be thanked for participating and applying via email.

You’ll know whether you’ll get accepted or not in 2 working days.

If you’re accepted, you can get started on working on the tasks available. If you get rejected, you’ll be asked to reapply in 45 days and follow the same procedure.

If you get accepted, you’ll be asked to “Complete Registration” and it will take you to a page containing all the guidelines that you need to follow to determine the best quality of work possible for Rev.Com

Once you get accepted, you’ll be able to take on these 4 different types of positions:

• Transcriptionist – convert spoken English into text files
• Captioner – convert spoken English and add captions on video
• Subtitler - convert spoken words in English and add them to video
• Translator – translate other languages into English

The 3R’s of Rev.Com

To determine your income with Rev.Com, you have to keep an eye out for the 3R’s.

This is Rev.Com’s ranking for their employees, which is designed to guarantee quality and to reward hard work and loyalty.

The rankings will also determine what kind of jobs you’ll be able to take on.

Rookie

This rank will let you take audio or video files lasting up to 30 minutes. Once file is submitted, you’ll be given feedback on the quality of your work.

This is required before you get promoted to the next rank.

Revver

To get to this rank, you’ll need to maintain accuracy and formatting ratings. But if you do get to this rank, you’ll be able to take on video and audio files up to 2 hours long.

Your work will be randomly graded, depending on mistakes calculated accordingly. You can send transcribed files directly to the clients.

Revver+

You need to maintain a certain accuracy or formatting rating at the rank of Revver to get promoted to this rank. You’ll be able to claim files as long as 90 minutes before the other 2 ranks. Think of it as getting first dibs.

How To Make Money with Rev.Com?

The pay varies accordingly within Rev.Com. It’s not as high as you might think, and you may get varied monthly income depending on the kinds of work available for that period.

A basic transcription or captioning job pays out $8 to $15 per hour, which is a minimum of $20 minutes of audio and video file.

Translators have a higher rating, at about $5 to $8 per video minute.

Their payout option is only through PayPal. There is no minimum withdrawal amount.

Pay is done once a week on a Monday.

Even with all its accolades and awards, it doesn’t guarantee you the kind of income that you would expect from it.

Some people have mentioned getting jobs that have crappy pay, or getting days where there aren’t even enough jobs.

Sure, your hourly rate may be higher than minimum wage, but you’re not exactly getting 8 hours’ worth of work.

#2 Strict Qualifications and Requirements

Because Rev.Com works with high-end clients, it’s no surprise that they guarantee close to perfection in terms of quality of work.

If you commit too many errors or if your grade does not reach the bare minimum, your account will be shut down and closed.

Remember that the company doesn’t hire based on qualifications but rather on how well people did in their tests.

Rev.Com provides you with the option to listen to a file for a few minutes before you can pick it up for work.

This is something that most transcription companies will not allow you to do. As soon as you pick up the file, that’s yours no matter how difficult it is.
