Is Nerium International a Scam? (Pyramid Scheme Alert?!)

Welcome to my Nerium International review!

"Are you interested to earn a part-time to a full-time income by just sharing and selling products you love?"

That's Nerium's sales pitch and they claimed that you have the potential to not only achieve financial freedom with their compensation plan, but you can also win a Lexus car bonus within just 90 days after joining them.

First of all, I must Congratulate you for taking your time to do your own research before buying into any "seemingly good" product or business opportunity.

That's the way to avoid scams and find the legitimate way to make money online!

To be completely transparent with you, I'm not associated with Nerium in any form.

So, rest assured that I'm not here to promote or pitch anything to you about this company, unlike what their distributors are doing.

I've reviewed hundreds of programs and business opportunities on my site here and I'm here to give you an honest and unbiased 3rd party review of Nerium International.

To be honest, there are quite a lot of UGLY TRUTHS that Nerium members, distributors & partners don't want you to know.

But I'm revealing every single one of them to you in this review.

Summary: The good news is that Nerium is a legit skincare MLM company where it's possible for you to earn real money or even iPads and Lexus cars. However, you must know that Nerium is a typical MLM where you need a lot of recruiting. In fact, recruiting is the MAIN focus of this business (I'll prove it to you!). Not only that, you need to spend hundreds of dollars just to get started.

What is Nerium?

Nerium International is a "global relationship marketing company offering breakthrough, proprietary age-fighting skincare and wellness products."

You know...this is just their beautiful way of describing themselves.

In simple language, Nerium is a Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) company selling skincare and wellness products that mostly focus on anti-aging.

To be even more straightforward with you, it's just a company using anti-aging products to recruit people.

I know some of you, especially Nerium Brand Partners will not agree with me on this. But I'll show you the proof in just a moment.

Nerium Product Line

nerium product line

Back in 2011, Nerium was built upon just ONE single product - Nerium Age-Defying Night Cream (aka NeriumAD):

nerium age defying night cream

Nerium Age-Defying Night Cream

This was the ONLY product they offer when they just getting started.

But it's also their flagship product today (of course they have innovated and upgraded it over the years).

Today, they have expanded their product line to include more anti-aging products like:

  • Lotion
  • Face wash
  • Eye serum
  • Vitamins

They were able to build upon this product because they claimed that it is an advanced and clinically-tested anti-aging product.

It can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation and provide overall improvement in the appearance of damaged skin.

Do Nerium's products really work?

To be honest, this is very subjective.

Some people were very happy with the results and love the products. Some didn't feel any difference while the rest experience serious skin issues like rashes and allergic reactions.

Do the products work? Yes, they do but only for some.

Some people claimed that Nerium products simply provide a placebo effect.

Personally, I haven't tried the products myself. So, the only way for you to know if it works is to try it out yourself.

However, let me give you some FACTS that you MUST know before even consider trying Nerium's products...

Do you know why Nerium International is called "Nerium"?

Here's why...

All Nerium's products contain one plant extract called "oleander".

And the full name of this plant is called "Nerium oleander":

Nerium oleander flowers leaves

Nerium oleander flowers & leaves

That's how Nerium got its name from.

You don't need to know what's the nature and effects of this plant. The most important thing you need to know is that Nerium oleander is a HIGHLY TOXIC PLANT!

You can read more about how poisonous it is in this article.

I'm sure it definitely has its positive health effects. If not, Nerium won't use it and even adopt its name as their brand.

However, it is a really huge concern especially oleander is such a poisonous plant.

I guess that's probably the reason why some people are experiencing rashes and allergic reactions on their skins.

My suggestion to you is don't even try it after knowing all these facts. It's not worth a try in my opinion.

How to Make Money with Nerium?

Just like any other MLM companies, there are 2 main ways for you to make money with Nerium International:

  1. Find customers and sell their products to earn retail commissions
  2. Recruit people and build your downline teams to earn various types of bonuses (including the Lexus Car Bonus)

But in order to do that, you need to be a qualified Nerium Brand Parter first...

How to Get Started with Nerium?

Nerium Brand Parter simply refers to distributors who are helping Nerium to sell products and recruit downline members.

To become a Brand Partner, you have to purchase either one of the following Starter Kits:

nerium costs

(Source: Nerium Blog)

  • Basic Kit ($49.95) - Personalized marketing website, training/marketing materials, online business center, Nerium order forms, self-development audio books, info on hosting your Nerium party/opportunity presentation
  • Starter Pack ($249.95) - 3 bottles of night cream
  • Bronze Starter Packs ($499.95) - Additional 4 bottles of night cream + 1 bonus day cream
  • Silver Starter Pack ($999.95) - Additional 14 bottles of night cream + 2 bonus day cream
  • Gold Starter Pack ($1,749.95) - Additional 30 bottles of night cream + 4 bonus day cream

Basically, the "Basic Kit" consists of the essential materials you need to get started with your business but it doesn't come with any Nerium products.

If you're on a budget and you choose to only purchase the Basic Kit, nobody can stop you from doing that.

But the problem is that you don't have any products to use, demo, and sell.

That's why, the only logical option is to at least purchase one of the Starter Packs that comes with products. (P.S. All Starter Packs include the Basic Kits)

With that, you'll be an official Nerium Brand Partner who can start promoting their products and recruit people.

Take note!

In order for you to stay active and qualify for commissions, you still need to meet the monthly order requirement (or autoship) if you can't make enough sales/recruit enough people.

So, this could mean another hundred dollars of expenditure per month for beginners.

Nerium International Compensation Plan

Nerium International has a huge focus on helping you to achieve the Lexus Car Bonus.

So this is the basic concept:

  1. Recruit 3 people to get 10% check match
  2. Help your first 3 sponsored members recruit 3 people under them to get an iPad
  3. Help your first 3 sponsored members get an iPad and you can get a Lexus Car Bonus (One-year lease only)
  4. Help 12 people get a Lexus Car Bonus and you'll get another $50,000 bonus

The screenshot below is the whole picture of this:

Nerium Compensation plan

As you can see, this is all about recruiting and helping your downlines to recruit even more.

Of course there are more details and requirements. But that's the overall concept to get the Lexus Car Bonus (which unfortunately is just a one-year lease my friend).

Apart from the Lexus Car Bonus, which is their main incentive to recruit people, other types of commission include:

  • Retail Sales - 10% to 26% commission of your retail sales depending on your rank and sales volume
  • Team Commissions - This is basically the unilevel commission you can earn from the sales volume your downline teams generate
  • Other bonuses inlcude: Customer Acquisition Bonus, Pack Bonus, Senior Director Bonus, Coaching commissions and many more...

As many of you know, MLM's compensation plan is often very complicated to understand and explain.

So, I've just given you the overall picture. For more details about Nerium compensation plan, please watch the videos below...

Nerium International Ugly Truths Revealed!

1. Recruit, Recruit, Recruit...

Like what I've explained earlier in the compensation plan, your main focus in Nerium is recruiting, especially for the iPad and Lexus Car Bonus.

Everything is about recruiting. It's kinda like a "recruit or die" scheme.

Don't believe me?

Here's the proof:

is nerium a pyramid scheme

The above screenshot was taken from Nerium's Success Planner, an introductory guide to help new distributors get started.

As you can see, it stated that your 2 main goals when you're just starting out with Nerium are:

  1. Become 3UR Free Qualified
  2. Fast Start Qualify (FSQ)

In simple language, it means that when you've recruited 3 preferred customers with each of them maintaining a monthly autoship, you can enjoy your Nerium monthly autoship for FREE.

Also, if you can successfully recruit 3 distributors plus some other criteria within the first 30 days of joining Nerium, you can qualify for their Fast Start Bonus which pays out either $75 or $150.

Can you see that it's all about recruiting now?

Here's another proof:

nerium pyramid scheme

This is another part of their Success Plan training.

If you have experience with MLM/network marketing, you'll be familiar with this thing called the "Memory Jogger" where you're required to come up with at least 100 people whom you think will be interested in Nerium's products or business opportunity.

As you can see from the list, it all starts with your friends and family members. And then it expands to your co-workers, neighbors, etc...

Basically, your job is to contact them, meet up with them and try to sell them either the product or the business opportunity.

Let me tell you, without proper training and skills, this is the fastest way for you to get into the "NFL Club". (i.e. the No Friend Left Club)

2. Pyramid Scheme?!

Since the main focus of Nerium is to recruit members and that's the main way for their distributors to earn commission and bonuses, a lot of people are calling it a pyramid scheme.

Even the official authorities have taken action against Nerium...

As you can see from this document, a nationwide class-action lawsuit has been filed against Nerium International, along with three high-level executives, a top distributor and 10 unknown co-conspirators, who are alleged to be operating a pyramid scheme.

In my opinion, it's really hard to determine if Nerium is a pyramid scheme because they do have their own products to sell.

That's why it's getting harder and harder to define modern pyramid schemes.

Many MLM companies are operating in the grey area where it's hard to determine if it's a pyramid scheme or not.

But no matter what, do you want to get involved in such controversial business?

I'm sure you can see why I don't recommend this business opportunity, right?

3. Inappropriate Marketing Tactics

Since most of the profit is in recruiting, many distributors have adopted inappropriate marketing tactics such as using Photoshopped 'Before & After' pictures to show how magical Nerium's products are.

There are a lot of complaints online saying that distributors of Nerium are very pushy towards selling and recruiting.

Complaints of Nerium is all over the internet. If you don't believe me, you can do a simple Google search.

4. Lawsuits, Lawsuits, Lawsuits...

Nerium was only founded in 2011 which means they're only in business for less than 10 years at the point of this writing.

Yet, they already have more than 20 lawsuit cases range from product liability, defamation, employment discrimination, trademark infringement to fraud allegations.

The most recent case, a 10 count complaint alleging fraud, breach of contract and defamation, among other things, was filed in February 2018 by Nerium’s top distributors, Mark and Tammy Smith, and is chock full of eye-popping allegations about Olsen and Nerium.

Would you still be interested to join this company after knowing so many ugly truths behind it?

5. Lots of Complaints

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has more than 100 complaints on file regarding Nerium.

More than half of these complaints, which were filed between June 2012 and July 2016, had to do with consumers having trouble getting refunds and unwanted credit card charges.

Even on Better Business Bureau (BBB) where Nerium has an A+ rating, there's a total of 97 complaints raised against Nerium International...

nerium complaints

Let me just list down some of the major complaints for you:

  • Serious rashes & allergic reaction with their skin after uising Nerium Night Cream
  • Unable to get a refund and cancel their order/autoship
  • This results in unwanted credit card charges, etc...

Just take a look at 2 examples below:

6. Saturated Market

To be honest, after reviewing so many online scams and MLMs, I've found that anti-aging is nothing new and special.

Yes, it can be a profitable industry since many people today are very concern about their age and their appearance.

However, there are simply too many MLM companies competing in this exact same market.

Judging from all the ugly facts about Nerium, I'm sure you can agree with me that there are much better anti-aging products and businesses out there.

Let me just list down some of the main competitors of Nerium in the anti-aging market:

7. Extremely Expensive Startup Costs

Although you can get started with just $49.95 for their Basic Kits, it's definitely not enough for you to start earning money because you don't have any products with that.

So, it's inevitable that you have to spend a few hundred dollars to purchase those Starter Packs.

This hasn't include the cost of your monthly autoship and the cost of your marketing campaigns.

P.S. This program that has enabled me to generate a 4-Figure Monthly Passive Income at just 21 years old is FREE to get started and only cost $49/month fee to go full-time!

What's Good About Nerium International?

1. Accredited by BBB

As you can see, there are a lot of downsides to this MLM company.

However, I wouldn't say it's a scam because it's at least accredited by Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating as you can see below:

nerium bbb rating

The problem is that having an A+ rating doesn't really mean the company is good.

In fact, as you can see, there's a total of 97 customer complaints listed on BBB.

2. Explosive Growth

Another thing worth mentioning is that Nerium is a fast growing company.

  • It was the fastest & youngest company ever to hit the top Global 100 List
  • It's also the fastest company to hit $100 million within first year in business
  • In 2015, it hit $1 Billion in cumulative sales, just 4 years into business

From these facts, we can't deny the growth of Nerium over the past few years.

But the main problems and concerns still apply.

It doesn't change the fact that it is still a MLM company focusing on traditional way of recruiting!

Is Nerium International a Scam?

No, Nerium is NOT a scam.

Like I've said, they are accredited by BBB and their growth over the past few years was explosive.

However, I think I've given you enough evidence proving to you that Nerium isn't a good business opportunity you should spend your precious time and hard earned money on.

Their products are pretty controversial and problematic as well.

So, I'm not recommending Nerium International for both products and business opportunity!

How I Make a Living Online...

I'm not a fan of MLM, not because it's illegal or not profitable, but because of all the restrictions and the expensive costs involved.

Instead, Affiliate Marketing is my top recommended business model for anyone to make money online.

The reason is simple...

  • You don't have to recruit anyone to make money
  • You have the freedom to promote any products you want and not being restricted to only promote the products from one MLM company
  • It's Free to get started

In fact, with affiliate marketing...

I've personally created a 4-Figure Monthly Passive Income Stream and become financially independent at just 21 years old without any College degree or working experience!

Through my own hard work, I went from a broke restaurant waiter to living my dream laptop lifestyle in less than a year's time...
