What is Chegg Tutor?

Chegg Tutor is a 2-in-1 platform for students and tutors. For students, they are able to request help for their homework or school assignments.

For tutors, it gives them an opportunity to make money by helping these students.

Is Chegg Tutors a Scam - Landing Page

Chegg Tutors, formerly known as instaEDU, was co-founded by Dan Johnston, Alison Johnston, and Joey Shurtleff in San Francisco, CA in 2011.

For this review, we’re going to focus on the tutorial side of things.

Inside Chegg Tutor

As a tutor for Chegg Tutor, you’ll be assigned a class or a tutoring session based on your educational attainment and background.

Students will submit questions, choose a tutor, and then the tutoring session starts on a visual whiteboard.

The session can be carried out via text, audio, or video, depending on student’s preferences (sorry, not the tutor’s).

If the student and the site moderators are happy with the session, you will be paid based on the length of the tutorial session and your rating on the site.

What Are The Requirements?

Chegg Tutor hires tutors from around the world, as long as they have the minimum requirements such as:

  • A working laptop or a computer
  • High-speed Internet connection
  • Microphone and webcam (a must, considering that video and audio sessions are required)

You can get microphones and webcams for as low as $35, and laptops for as low as $200 on Amazon.

It’s quite a little investment on your part, but it may be worth it if you do a good enough job on Chegg Tutors.

Once you have the hardware setup, you’ll now be required to create your profile by using your email or your Facebook account.

You can start the application process by uploading your profile photo and providing personal information amongst other things.

You’ll also have to provide valid ID to prove your identity (e.g. passport, driver’s license, and so on).

At times, you’ll also be required to upload a copy of your diploma or transcripts of records so Chegg can make sure you graduated with a college degree.

Once you submit all requirements, your application is reviewed manually by the staff of Chegg Tutors and you’ll know if you get accepted or not in a week or so.

What Subjects Will You Teach?

The subject you’re handling will depend on your educational background, and the subject needs of the students.

The latter is constantly changing, so you’ll find yourself juggling one subject to the next.

As of this writing, the popular subjects include Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Accounting, Linear Algebra, Finance, and Mechanical Engineering.

So, Chegg Tutor has a more holistic approach in terms of teaching students as opposed to programs such as DaDaABC only focusing on teaching English.

How Much Money Do Chegg Tutors Make?

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Your starting rate as a tutor is $20 per hour, which is quite high if you compare it to federal minimum wages in the USA or other countries.

Your rate starts to increase if your rating goes up as well.

But don’t quit your day job just yet. Let me continue.

Chegg Tutor adds up the number of hours you spent teaching students in a week and will pay you for that.

The $20 pay rate is also applied to the exact number of minutes worked in a week.

The site also requires the students to have a minimum lesson time of 5 minutes.

So if a student ends the session in 2 minutes, you still get charged the minimum lesson time of 5 minutes.

How Does Chegg Tutors Pay You?

Chegg Tutor pays out via PayPal every week on Thursday, based on the number of hours worked from Wednesday 7:05AM PDT of the previous week to 7:05AM PDT of the current week.

You only need at least 5 minutes worth of work to qualify for payment.

Who's Chegg Tutor For?

Chegg Tutor is a decent opportunity for those who want to spend their free time teaching students about particular subjects.

With that said, it’s intended for those who are capable of teaching different subject matter.

Chegg Tutor Ugly Truths Revealed!

#1 - Limited Tutorial Opportunities!

Chegg Tutor suffers from a common problem associated with surveys and GPT sites, and that is the limited opportunities for income.

In Chegg’s case, the tutorial opportunities are limited and has been the main complaint of a lot of tutors.

And you’ll read a lot of these complaints from their Indeed and Glassdoor profiles.

#2 – No Advancement Opportunities!

Another common complaint from the aforementioned profiles is the lack of advancement opportunities.

I suppose that you might get a raise based on your performance, but advancement opportunities are a different story.

What could’ve been done better to the program is if they had some sort of ranking to allow tutors to increase earning potential per hour to offset the lack of students, especially during certain times of the year.

#3 – Students Can Be Rude!

Sometimes, you’ll encounter rude students on this program, and while it takes a while to get accustomed to, some people might just quit the program entirely.

According to some tutors, a student’s opinion comes first so there’s no point in reporting these students to the site moderators.

Also, there’s no form of quality control to prevent these students from giving tutors bad feedback, so that’s another problem as well.

What I Like About Chegg Tutor?

#1 – Access To College Resources!

As a tutor, you get access to Chegg’s virtual library of college textbooks to help you with your classes.

This is a huge benefit compared to other tutor companies that barely give you anything to work with.

Is Chegg Tutor a Scam?

Chegg Tutor is a legitimate company that provides a decent work-at-home opportunity by hiring you as a tutor for their students.

Despite having a very impressive hourly rate, it’s not a good enough reason to quit your day job.

The income potential is low because of the limited tutorial opportunities, especially when you’re relying on students to seek help.

If you don’t mind spending your free time tutoring for a few bucks a week, then this might be worth a shot.
